Down to Earth Month: Green Team Sustainability Leadership at Stagʹs Leap Wine Cellars

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars has been Napa Green Certified from Soil to Bottle for over a decade. As a part of their commitment to continuing improvement, they have established a cross-departmental “Green Team” to engage and empower employees. The Green Team has members across multiple departments from vineyard operations, winemaking, safety, hospitality, communications, wine club, shipping, and more to ensure that sustainability is integrated into day-to-day operations.

In 2020, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars was due for Napa Green Winery recertification. As a part of the Resource Audit we looked at all of their efforts to maximize water efficiency. Inside the winery, they use state-of-the-art barrel washers with low flow, high pressure nozzles for barrel washing. In addition, they use cleaning products and practices that reduce the amount of water needed to sanitize tanks, and they use steam for sterilizing bottles.

I’m proud of our Napa Green certification and how committed the entire team is to sustainability and protecting the environment. We’re truly building a culture throughout the winery that recognizes the role each of us plays in protecting the environment and encourages everyone to do their part.

Outside of the winery, Green Team lead and Safety Specialist, Debi Emery, is particularly proud that, “Every drop of wastewater is collected, treated and recycled for our 14 acres of ornamental landscaping.” They use drought tolerant, native landscaping and have permeable pathways that allow rainwater to soak into the ground and recharge groundwater rather than running off.

Sustainability is a core initiative for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. Each department in the winery has set their own sustainability goal, from laminating tasting notes for reuse and implementing QR codes, to eliminating waste cardboard at bottling.

Our commitment to sustainability is not seen as one person’s job – it is everyone working together for a more sustainable future for our company and our community.

One of the main resistances to phasing out glyphosate is increased labor and equipment costs. However, the costs of herbicides and fertilizers have risen dramatically, so increased labor demands can be offset by reduced supply chain purchases.

In addition, leaders like Grgich Hills Estate have shown that regenerative organic farming can be cost-effective. According to an analysis by Brotemarkle Davis & Co. LLP accounting firm, the average annual per acre cost of vineyard management in the Napa Valley is $14,800, with $3,800 in depreciation. At Grgich, they spend $11,000 per acre, with only $1,300 in depreciation due to the longer life of their vineyards.

Learn from regional leaders about the practical costs, benefits, and ROI of herbicide-free, organic, and regenerative vineyard management.
