STAGS LEAP STUNNERS

CLOS DU VAL • STAG’S LEAP WINE CELLARS • CHIMNEY ROCK

Looking for incredible views in Stags Leap? Check out these breathtaking wineries. Please be sure to make advanced reservations.
Clos Du Val Pic

Clos Du Val sits on 150 acres of estate vineyards backed by the Vaca mountains. Clos Du Val’s legendary debut 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon was one of only six California Cabernets selected for the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris Tasting, where California defeated some of Bordeaux’s finest. Ten years later, their reputation for crafting gracefully age-worthy wines was solidified when their very same 1972 Cabernet took first place in the Judgment of Paris rematch. Clos Du Val recently redesigned their tasting room, opening the artfully designed Hirondelle House, with floor to ceiling windows that look out on the patio and vineyards to the horizon. In addition, they installed a new energy efficient refrigeration system, upgraded to high efficiency, long-life LED lighting, have a solar array that provides renewable energy to the winery, and achieved organic vineyard certification in 2020.

Napa Valley, California

Founded in 1970 and considered a Napa Valley first-growth estate, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars won the red wine portion of the 1976 Paris tasting for its 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon. When visiting the FAY Outlook & Visitor Center, the wine educators will guide you through the beautiful estate Cabernets set against a gorgeous backdrop of historic vineyards and the Stags Leap Palisades. Reserve a tour of the caves and experience the natural climate control, perfect for aging the wines.

Chimney Rock Winery Pic

The unique white Cape Dutch architecture of Chimney Rock stands out amidst the green of vineyards on all sides. In the evenings the estate is known as the “brightest light” in the Stags Leap District. Grab a glass of estate Cabernet and wander into the courtyard, where you can see a frieze of Ganymede, cupbearer of the gods, above the door of the original barrel room. Winemaker Elizabeth Vianna is thoughtful and passionate about sustainable farming and non-interventionist winemaking. Elizabeth and her team have shown innovation in improving resources efficiency by making recycling a Key Performance Indicator and providing incentives for improvement. Staff created carefully labelled recycling containers with close monitoring to ensure as much material from production is recycled as possible.

Please note: In order to protect the health and safety of all guests as we continue to be vigilant about the spread of COVID-19 all wineries will be reservation-only for the time being. It is essential to make appointments in advance and also review each winery’s posted policies and procedures before you arrive. Don’t forget your classiest wine tasting masks for entering and exiting the winery.

One of the main resistances to phasing out glyphosate is increased labor and equipment costs. However, the costs of herbicides and fertilizers have risen dramatically, so increased labor demands can be offset by reduced supply chain purchases.

In addition, leaders like Grgich Hills Estate have shown that regenerative organic farming can be cost-effective. According to an analysis by Brotemarkle Davis & Co. LLP accounting firm, the average annual per acre cost of vineyard management in the Napa Valley is $14,800, with $3,800 in depreciation. At Grgich, they spend $11,000 per acre, with only $1,300 in depreciation due to the longer life of their vineyards.

Learn from regional leaders about the practical costs, benefits, and ROI of herbicide-free, organic, and regenerative vineyard management.
