The RISE Leadership Award will be presented to the winery, vineyard, or industry operation that has made outstanding strides in caring for employees and building a more diverse and inclusive team over the past year. The Awardee will give a 5-7 minute โTED Talkโ on their results and impact.
Part of sustainability leadership is thinking about ROI in new ways, including the bottom-line benefits of building and retaining powerful teams. This means building internal community where employees feel not only cared for, but listened to and empowered. This also means getting involved in broader community challenges like affordable housing.
During this Salon,ย Priyanka French, Winemaker atย Signorello Estate,ย will lead a discussion where weโll hear fromย Herman Hernandez, Executive Director ofย Los Cien, on how theyโve created a platform that enables volunteers to organize events and dialogues about a range of issues important to farmworkers and others in the community, and their goals to expand their reach in Napa County;ย Arnulfo Solorio, Partner and Vice President of Operations atย Silverado Farming Companyย and Founder of theย Napa Valley Farmworker Foundationย on how to attract and retain employees by providing education opportunities and upward mobility through professional development; andย Larry Florin, CEO ofย Burbank Housing,ย about his extensive experience with the challenges and methods to get affordable housing built in North Bay communities.
Priyanka French | Winemaker at Signorello Estate
At just 34 years old, Priyanka French is a fierce champion of diversity in the wine industry; sheโs not only one of the youngest female winemakers to take the helm at a Napa Valley winery, but also one of just a handful of Indian winemakers in California.
French grew up in Mumbai and acquired her Bachelor of Technology in Food Science and Technology from the University of Mumbai and went on to work for several companies, including Nestle. But a field trip during her senior year to Indiaโs wine country nagged at her for years until finally, she moved to California to pursue a Master of Science in Viticulture and Enology from University of California, Davis and was the first Indian national to do so at the prestigious university.
She cut her teeth in wine regions all over the world, from the iconic Louis M. Martini Winery in Napa Valley to Hospices de Beaune in Burgundy, Cognac, and New Zealand before returning to California where she worked at Stagsโ Leap Winery and then the preeminent Dalla Valle. There, French spent five years working in both the cellar and vineyard, learning first-hand from three of Napa Valleyโs greatest winemaking talents: Andy Erickson, Michel Rolland, and Steve Matthiasson.
Her experience in estate winemaking and crafting luxury Cabernet Sauvignon led her to Signorello Estate, where she joined as winemaker in 2019 and was tasked with helping to not only rebuild the winery, but also fine tune winemaking and take the vaunted brand to the next level.
French is one of the industryโs leading fighting for more diversity in wine. She serves on the board of Wine Unify, which provides scholarship programs for WSET certifications to people of color and was an initiator in the Batonnage Forumโs mentorship program that supports women in the wine industry. She is rarely seen without her trusted side kick, Chloe a 3.5 year old Australian Shephard. When not making or drinking wine, French can be found gardening, cooking and exploring the outdoors.

He began working at Charles Krugย as a field worker and mechanicโs assistant while following crops through Arizona, California, and Washington.ย He eventually worked his way through school and was able to enroll in Napa Valley College in 1984. Since he began at the college, he has completed enough courses to receive three Associates Degrees โ while working full-time and raising a family. That he had energy left to volunteer through the Napa Valley Grapegrowers and make such a difference in our community is testament to his work ethic and strong sense of self.
Solorio was the first person in his family to become documented, become a citizen, and go to school. Heย has worked as a vineyard manager for some of the most storied of Napaโs properties, including Franciscan, Domaine Chandon, Mondavi, Charles Krug, and Tonella Family.
He strongly believes education is the key to success and that learning never stops.ย Beyond managing operations and personnel at Silverado Farming Company, he is part of the team that develops training, education, personal growth, and reward programs for employees. Napa Greenโs vineyard team is trained to develop regenerative, whole-farm Carbon Farm Plans (CFPs). These plans review all of the current beneficial practices that are increasing soil and ecosystem health and storing carbon, and identify additional opportunities to regenerate the soil and vineyard ecosystem and simultaneously maximize carbon capture in a given property. Each vineyardโs goal is to become carbon neutral (or negative) and increase the resilience of vineyards, businesses, and our community.

Forests are not only our largest terrestrial carbon sink, they are also home to 80% of the worldโs on-land diversity. We need healthy forests, which means a balanced density of native trees and plants. Healthy forests experience lower intensity fires with less tree mortality, meaning higher carbon retention and ecosystem function.

Napa Green Certified Vineyards implement climate-smart burn practices, such as Conservation Burning, Flame Cap Kilns, and Air Curtain Burners. These practices reduce smoke and emissions and create biochar. Biochar is re-fossilized wood that provides long-term carbon storage. Even more compelling, when inoculated and applied with compost, biochar aids in water retention and increases water and fertilizer efficiency.
