WHAT IS NAPA GREEN VINEYARD?

Napa Green Vineyard certification provides a pathway for growers to improve soil health, become carbon neutral to negative within six to nine years, and increase the resilience of vineyards, businesses, and our community. The Napa Green Vineyard certification standards have six core elements:
  • Social Justice, Diversity & Inclusion standards that incorporate direct input and feedback from farmworkers
  • Implementing Regenerative Ag, Soil Health & Carbon Farm Plans
  • Irrigation Assessments and Water Use efficiency
  • Forest Management for Health & Fire Resilience (where applicable)
  • Adherence to a Prohibited & Restricted Pesticides list
  • Climate-Smart Burning & Alternatives

WHAT IS NAPA GREEN WINERY?

Napa Green is one of only four sustainable winegrowing programs nationwide offering the opportunity for comprehensive soil to bottle certification in both the vineyard and winery. 40% of all of the certified sustainable wineries in CA are in Napa County. These wineries implement more than 120 sustainability and stewardship standards to:

  • Save energy and water and increase efficiency
  • Prevent waste through recycling, composting and environmentally preferable purchasing
  • Reduce GHG emissions and the winery’s carbon footprint
  • Commit to social equity
  • The whole facility is certified from production to administration to hospitality

Natural Cork is a Win for Planet and People

Natural cork is the most sustainable wine closure. Did you know that cork is made from the bark of cork oak trees? The bark cannot be harvested until the oak tree is 25 years old, and is then harvested every nine years, using ancient harvesting techniques. The bark harvest actually prolongs the life of the trees, which can live from 100 to 300 years.

One of the main resistances to phasing out glyphosate is increased labor and equipment costs. However, the costs of herbicides and fertilizers have risen dramatically, so increased labor demands can be offset by reduced supply chain purchases.

In addition, leaders like Grgich Hills Estate have shown that regenerative organic farming can be cost-effective. According to an analysis by Brotemarkle Davis & Co. LLP accounting firm, the average annual per acre cost of vineyard management in the Napa Valley is $14,800, with $3,800 in depreciation. At Grgich, they spend $11,000 per acre, with only $1,300 in depreciation due to the longer life of their vineyards.

Learn from regional leaders about the practical costs, benefits, and ROI of herbicide-free, organic, and regenerative vineyard management.

Confirmed Speakers:
• Ivo Jeramaz, Grgich Hills
• Phil Coturri, Enterprise Vineyard Management & Winery Sixteen 600
• Brad Kurtz, Gloria Ferrer
• Brenae Royal, St. Supery
• Rebekah Wineburg, Quintessa
