Winery CERTIFICATION

NAPA GREEN WINERY CERTIFICATION

Making an exceptional wine requires stewardship and attention to detail. The same is true of achieving Napa Green Winery certification. Napa Green Certified Wineries implement more than 120 sustainability standards to:

Your whole facility is third-party certified, from the cellar to offices to tasting room and outdoor landscaping. Knowledgeable Napa Green staff are available to help with every step of the certification process.

Benefits of Napa Green Winery Program

INTEGRATED RESOURCE AUDIT: A core step in the process of becoming a Napa Green Winery is the “Integrated Resource Audit” – a one-stop energy, water and waste assessment with an expert engineer. This is part of what makes the Napa Green Winery certification so unique and valuable. These audits baseline resource metrics so wineries can track changes and improvements over time. In addition, the Audit identifies opportunities to improve energy and water efficiency (saving $ and staff time) and increase recycling & composting.

Napa Green wineries receive a full Resource Audit at the start of certification and again every six years, with an Abbreviated Resource Audit every alternating three years as part of re-certification.

Audit Costs: The wineries that have implemented key Audit recommendations have had this investment repaid several times over.

WINERY CERTIFICATION FEES: Over the past five years Napa Green has helped members achieve more than $5 million in energy cost savings. Napa Green wineries have saved more than 28 million gallons of water and 16 million kilowatt hours of electricity.

Since Napa Green has become an independent non-profit we are implementing certification fees comparable to other sustainable winegrowing programs. These fees will cover a portion of the staff time that goes into facilitating certification, annual desk audits, re-certification and interim assistance.

Sustainability begins in the vineyard and goes right through to the bottle....And check this out: Glass represents about one-third of the carbon footprint of wine, so, in keeping with the lightness of the wine, we've chosen the lightest bottle we can find.

Join us for The Future of Water Workshop, to explore our water future, with highlights including a keynote from Peter Gleick, one of the world’s leading water experts (all guests will receive a copy of Peter’s most recent book, The Three Ages of Water) and Mimi Casteel, not only a viticulturist and winemaker, but also a forest ecologist with a vision for water resiliency.

Wine grape quality is closely tied to the right amount of water, at the right time. One of the most critical agricultural concerns with our changing climate, and more frequent & intense weather extremes, is precipitation and water availability. We’ve swung from historic drought to atmospheric rivers. Our community has huge swaths of unmanaged, unhealthy forests full of non-natives and overrun by firs, amplifying fire risk and undermining one of the most critical systems for groundwater recharge.

The good news is opportunities abound to optimize irrigation efficiency, and implement regenerative practices that improve soil health, water infiltration, and retention. A watershed coalition has also formed in Napa County to pilot and model creek & forest restoration for localized water resiliency and climate cooling.

Come learn more on Thursday, May 23rd at 9:00am at @silveroakcellars.
