Start your day at Chateau Boswell Winery. An enormous valley oak hangs seemingly suspended over the doorway to the wine cave. As you walk down into the cave, 65 feet under the earth, you’ll notice the excavated stone walls that exhibit the volcanic geological history of the Napa Valley. Try Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Owner Susan Boswell has ensured that a sustainable mindset is instilled in the employee culture, with standard operating procedures that reduce water and energy use. You’ll see the Napa Green Land and Napa Green Winery logos brilliantly displayed on the Chateau Boswell Estate wine labels.
Next, head up the road to Phifer Pavitt Wine, where you’ll try their Date Night Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Owners Suzanne and Shane have made many of their most important life decisions on their weekly date nights, including the decision to purchase the land for the winery. The Phifer Pavitts built a sustainable environment for their team literally from the ground up, building an “eco-chic” tasting room from reclaimed and recycled materials, with recycled blue jean insulation. Their vineyards are farmed using organic and sustainable farming methods. Learn more on one of their Eco Tours and Tastings, or you can even book an experience where you’ll hear their story directly from Suzanne Phifer Pavitt, the proprietor. Phifer Pavitt won the Great Wine Capitals’ 2017 Sustainable Wine Tourism award.
From here, travel to Napa Valley’s western hillside and Stony Hill Vineyard. This small family winery has been making wine for more than 60 years. The founders, Fred and Eleanor McCrea, originally focused on white wines like Chardonnay, Gewurtztraminer, Riesling and Semillon. A few years ago, the winery expanded to include Cabernet Sauvignon. Granddaughter Sarah McCrea is the third generation to steward Stony Hill, certified Napa Green Land and dry-farmed since its inception.
