NAPA GREEN NEWS

Happy 2023 and Year of the Rabbit! This is meant to be a year of hope and our year has certainly started off hopeful. Marisa Taylor, former winemaker at Rutherford Hill, officially joined our team in January. We are now five employees and three consultants strong!

Our message of sustainability leadership and accelerating climate action in the wine industry is spreading and resonating. Just a few highlights of where I’ve spoken in the past few months: the Net Good Summit in San Diego, Porto Protocol in Lisbon, XChateau and the The Four Top podcasts, the SSU Executive MBA class, Unified Symposium, and the NVV Annual Meeting just last week.

Thank you to those who supported our Give!Guide campaign during the holiday giving season. All year round you can make tax deductible donations through our website to support the continued growth and impact of our work.

This newsletter is all about EVENTS, EVENTS, EVENTS! February 23 Soil Health Analysis w/Vineyard Soil Technologies | March 1 Regenerative Agriculture Intensive w/John Kempf | April 5-20 RISE Climate & Wine Symposium. You’re not going to want to miss the second year of the Symposium, now aptly named RISE: Resilience, Innovation, Sustainability, Empowerment. We’re looking forward to seeing you and your teams at some or all of these events!

Thank you,

Anna Brittain

CEO & Executive Director

Join us for RISE and get involved in accelerating sustainability and climate action in the wine industry! Lunch & wine are included. Early bird prices end February 25th. We are working on securing CECs for several of the workshops/salons.

In case you weren’t able to join us last year for the Symposium (formerly THRIVES, now returning as RISE) this is a series of six half-day events organized around the Six Pillars of Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership:

We already have 40 speakers confirmed, including Jancis Robinson (Apr 5), Mimi Casteel (Apr 13), Maryam Ahmed (Apr 19), and Esther Mobley (Apr 20), and another 20 in the works. RISE goes beyond inspiration to provide the mentors, resources, tools, and services to start making positive change.

If not here, where? If not now, when? Let’s build local resilience and longevity AND leverage our powerful leadership platform to catalyze global industry transformation.

A huge thanks to our Premier, Community, and Exclusive Event Sponsors:

FEBRUARY 23 – SOIL HEALTH ANALYSIS W/VINEYARD SOIL TECHNOLOGIES

Chimney Rock Winery | 9 am-1 pm | Tickets are free & lunch is provided

Join us to learn about how and why to sample and analyze your soil health. This workshop will be led by Nick Madden of VST (Paul Anamosa’s firm) and is focused on empowering growers to sample their soil and interpret and implement the results. We took advanced samples from the workshop site that we will interpret together, and we will have a soil pit dug on-site to investigate. Because of the hands-on nature of the event space is limited so sign up soon to secure your spot. REGISTER HERE

MARCH 1 – AEA REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE INTENSIVE W/JOHN KEMPF

Napa Valley College | 9 am-4 pm | Lunch is provided

Advancing Eco Agriculture is hosting a full-day intensive led by their founder, John Kempf, with presentations from Napa Green grower Ivo Jeramaz of Grgich Hills, and Greg Pennyroyal of Wilson Creek Winery. Registration will launch this week. Keep an eye on their events page: https://www.advancingecoag.com/events-calendar

EARTH MONTH & EARTH DAY WINE DONATIONS

As Megan Scott says, “Earth Day is our biggest holiday!” April is a time when guests, neighbors, consumers, restaurants and retailers are all extra tuned in to environmental stewardship and sustainable winegrowing. Take advantage of this month to share your sustainability story, with grounded examples and successes. In March we’ll be sharing some resources and tips for spotlighting your sustainability story on social media and other communications channels.

Seeking Member Green Wines: Earth Day Napa 2023 will return to Oxbow Commons on Sunday, April 23 and Napa Green member wines will once again be the exclusive wines poured. Please reach out to Megan, megan@napagreen.org, if you would like to donate a half or full-case.

Silver Oak Winery, Oakville
9:00 am - 12:15 pm

One of the most critical agricultural concerns with our changing climate, and more frequent & intense weather extremes, is precipitation and water availability. The good news is opportunities abound to optimize irrigation efficiency, and implement regenerative practices that improve soil health, water infiltration, and retention.

Join us for The Future of Water, with highlights including a keynote from Peter Gleick, one of the world’s leading water experts, and Mimi Casteel, not only a viticulturist and winemaker, but also a forest ecologist with a vision for water resiliency.

Join us for The Future of Water Workshop, to explore our water future, with highlights including a keynote from Peter Gleick, one of the world’s leading water experts (all guests will receive a copy of Peter’s most recent book, The Three Ages of Water) and Mimi Casteel, not only a viticulturist and winemaker, but also a forest ecologist with a vision for water resiliency.

Wine grape quality is closely tied to the right amount of water, at the right time. One of the most critical agricultural concerns with our changing climate, and more frequent & intense weather extremes, is precipitation and water availability. We’ve swung from historic drought to atmospheric rivers. Our community has huge swaths of unmanaged, unhealthy forests full of non-natives and overrun by firs, amplifying fire risk and undermining one of the most critical systems for groundwater recharge.

The good news is opportunities abound to optimize irrigation efficiency, and implement regenerative practices that improve soil health, water infiltration, and retention. A watershed coalition has also formed in Napa County to pilot and model creek & forest restoration for localized water resiliency and climate cooling.

Come learn more on Thursday, May 23rd at 9:00am at @silveroakcellars.
