June 7-23, Napa, CAย โ This monthย Napa Greenย and community partners are hostingย Napa THRIVESย โ a groundbreaking symposium with six half-day, tightly focused events organized around the six pillars of sustainable winegrowing leadership. Held live and in-person at Charles Krug Winery, the Napa THRIVES symposium is designed to accelerate sustainability and climate action in the wine industry. Guests will be encouraged to make commitments to action, and the THRIVES mentors and facilitators will follow-up and provide the resources and connections to turn these commitments to reality.
โIt has never been a better time to be a wine drinker,โ saysย Dan Petroski, Winemaker and owner of Napa Valleyโsย Massican. โThe gradual change in climateย over the last 30 years has propelled wine-growing regions from all corners of the globe to produce their best wines from a quality and critical perspective. As we revel in this momentum, we have to shift our energy and focus for the next 30 years, proactively tackling the challenges and disruptions of climate change so grape growing and winemaking can survive into the future. Itโs time for the Napa Valley to leverage its platform and set the bar for sustainable wine-growing leadership.ย Tuesday, June 7th at the Napa THRIVES symposium, our community will take a critical step toward accelerating leadership.โ
Tomorrow, the first of the events launches with a focus on Water Savings & Efficiency, an essential topic given Californiaโs current 1200-year drought, and all of the costs of transporting, heating, and treating water. The lineup of experts includesย Eric Asimov, Wine Critic with theย New York Times,ย Tod Mostero, Director of Viticulture & Winemaking atย Dominus Estate, andย Nathalie Jure, Director of Viticulture atย Opus One Winery. June 9 will move to Energy Savings & Efficiency, the quickest and most effective way to reduce the bottom line, and will include a marquee address from world-renowned climate expertย Bill McKibben,ย co-founder ofย Third Act andย 350.org.
During the June 14 event on Waste Prevention & Green Purchasing,ย Jancis Robinsonย MW, voted the worldโs most influential wine critic in 2018, and founder of the wine knowledge platformย JancisRobinson.com, will virtually share thoughts from London on the movement to โlighten-upโ glass weight and the carbon footprint of glass and other packaging. โThere are still so many โ producers, marketers, consumers โ who donโt realize that wineโs biggest contribution to carbon emissions is shipping unnecessarily heavy bottles,โ observes Robinson. โIโm looking forward to presenting the evidence and trying to change purchasing decisions.โ
As part of the June 21 event on Social Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Napa THRIVES will welcomeย Marquee speakerย Nikki Silvestri,ย Founder and CEO ofย Soil and Shadow. She has spoken at the White House, negotiated with the Environmental Protection Agency and received OxFam Americaโs โAct Local, Think Globalโ Award. Silvestri shares, โWhat I look forward to the most in my visit to speak at Napa THRIVES is being with all of the incredible practitioners that make the wine industry tick. Itโs an ancient practice that gets to the root of who we are as a species โ communion with the earth and one another. Vintners are keepers of our joy.โ
โThe Napa THRIVES symposium has been a year in the making,โ says Anna Brittain, Executive Director ofย Napa Greenย and co-founder ofย Napa THRIVES. โYou truly donโt want to miss this groundbreaking and action-oriented lineup of expert speakers and leaders. Each day ends with lunch and wine so you can genuinely connect with the speakers and other guests.โ

Congratulations to Napa Green Certified @cliffamily for winning the RISE Leadership Award for Supply Chain & Waste Management Excellence!
Clif Family attended our first conference & committed to reducing their bottle weight and waste. They set upon an inspiring journey to change their packaging based on their outdoors loving and mountaineering inspired founders. They were able to..
โข lighten the weight of a case of their wine by almost 8 lbs!
โข reduce their carbon output by 42 metric tons!
โข institute fully recyclable, bio based shippers that keep wine cool!
โข eliminate all foils!
โข eliminate all plastic & metal moving fully to renewable cork enclosures!
Their customers responded with absolute enthusiasm.
โThis story is not just about wine packaging or supply chain decisions. Itโs about how we do business. Itโs leading with values. Itโs about remembering that the best way to climb higher.. is to carry less.โ - Sarah Richmond, Clif Family Winery.

Napa Greenโs vineyard team is trained to develop regenerative, whole-farm Carbon Farm Plans (CFPs). These plans review all of the current beneficial practices that are increasing soil and ecosystem health and storing carbon, and identify additional opportunities to regenerate the soil and vineyard ecosystem and simultaneously maximize carbon capture in a given property. Each vineyardโs goal is to become carbon neutral (or negative) and increase the resilience of vineyards, businesses, and our community.

Forests are not only our largest terrestrial carbon sink, they are also home to 80% of the worldโs on-land diversity. We need healthy forests, which means a balanced density of native trees and plants. Healthy forests experience lower intensity fires with less tree mortality, meaning higher carbon retention and ecosystem function.

All of our members are committed to using at least 60% renewable energy, whether through on-site solar and other renewable sources or by working with @mcecleanenergy to access clean power through the grid. The impact? Over 1.2 million pounds of CO2e saved by wineries and vineyards in just one year. To put that into perspective itโs the equivalent to offsetting the emissions from driving over 1.5 million miles in a typical gas-powered car!
