On the northern edge of Calistoga visit the fairytale estate of Chateau Montelena, which won the 1976 Judgment of Paris white wine tasting with its 1973 Chardonnay. Try today's Chardonnay along with Dry Riesling and Zinfandel. Sustainability is part of Chateau Montelena's DNA - from back to nature solutions like employing a crew of 70 goats as weed eaters, to investing in the latest technologies, like the fastest Tesla charging station in the valley (as well as a universal EV charging station). They’ve installed a hi-tech fan system with blades shaped like airplane wings that circulates air with extreme efficiency, significantly reducing the need for air conditioning in the winery. Chateau Montelena has comprehensive certification in both the Napa Green Land and Napa Green Winery programs.
A few miles south on Highway 29 is the charming tasting room at Benessere Vineyards, where you'll enjoy the good life. Benessere makes exceptional Italian varietal wines, unique for the Napa Valley. Sit on the garden patio and enjoy the flagship Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese and Black Glass Zinfandel, among other wines. You can easily imagine you're in Italy surrounded by their vineyards, certified Napa Green Land. They have invested in preserving the riparian habitat along the Napa River, inviting the threatened Steelhead trout to come back and spawn.
A few miles south, visit Trinchero Napa Valley. This winery honors the Trinchero family's nearly seven-decade legacy of making wine in the Napa Valley. Taste the Sauvignon Blanc, one of the flagship Cabernet Sauvignons and other red wine blends. Trinchero Napa Valley is certified Napa Green Land, investing in preserving the landscape and the Napa River watershed for future generations. Trinchero Family Estates won the 2015 Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Award Green Medal for their green business practices.
